Surf Life Saving
Program Overview
The Gold Coast Academy of Sport is pleased to partner with Qld Surf Life Saving to deliver a specific program for developing athletes in Surf Life Saving Program from August to September each year.
The surf lifesaving program will be led by Surf Life Saving Queensland with the intent of developing the athlete’s understanding of performance and the necessities of improving performance. Coaches are notable people within the sport while education sessions are led by professional presenters in their field.
We are also proud to be able to partner with the state Association to offer talented young athletes the opportunity to further their knowledge in how they can improve their performance.

Selection Process
The Academy works alongside the state surf lifesaving body to identify those athletes who will benefit most from the skill development and education focus.
If athletes wish to express an interest in the program, please do not hesitate to contact the Academy and we are happy to discuss with the state representatives.
Pathway
Athletes will be selected from local Surf Lifesaving clubs on their competition merits and ability / potential. Athletes will be selected to undertake training and education sessions which will assist in their development to represent at state and national levels.
Eligibility
To be eligible for a GCAS surf lifesaving position in the program, athletes must:
- Nominated by the state association.
- Be currently residing in the Gold Coast City Council or joining Shires
- Be a current registered member of Surfing QLD
- Be a current financial member of a local association;
- Be committed to improving their performance in the hope of representation at high levels.
Athlete Benefits
A levy will be applicable to successful athletes and covers the full cost of participation the program, the GCAS polo shirt and a family ticket (3 pax) to the GCAS Annual Awards Evening.
Clubs are encouraged to assist where possible in covering or part covering the costs of the program.
In addition to regular scheduled beach / in water training, skill and personal development sessions athletes will receive:
- Core education sessions
- A GCAS polo
- Guest coaching and education sessions
