THE GOLD COAST ACADEMY OF SPORT AWARDS 2016
The Gold Coast Academy of Sport Awards night was held Thursday 27 October at RACV Royal Pines Resort. The Hon. Mick Veivers AM welcomed family, friends, sponsors and athletes to the seventh GCAS Annual Awards Night.
The night gave the Academy the opportunity to recognize the outstanding efforts of the top achievers in programs conducted throughout the year. Just as importantly, the Academy also recognised the incredible dedication of our elite coaching staff, volunteers and crucially the commitment of the athletes’ family and friends. All of these people contribute to make the sporting journey possible.
Since inception in 2009, the Academy is very proud to have provided ‘golden opportunities through sport’. In 2016 we have held or are currently holding programs for more than 280 athletes in the following sports – AWD Basketball, Cricket, Rugby Union, Rugby League, Soccer, Basketball, Future Stars within Upper Coomera State College and another outside of school and now Hockey, which has just commenced.
Mick recognised the support of his board, of which he welcomed two new members – David Eckersley and Nick Scott. He also took the opportunity to thank the Academy partners and sponsors – City of Gold Coast, Business GC, Griffith University, RACV Royal Pines Resort, Runaway Bay Sports Super Centre, Channel 9 NBN Television, Sea and Gold FM, and major sponsors of programs – Magic Millions, BLK, Hart Sport and Cambio Group Accountants.
The night recognised over 160 athletes who received graduation certificates from their various sporting programs. Each sporting programs recognised individual awards of “Athlete of the Year” and “Encouragement Award”.
